What are the benefits of using ceiling lights?

Ceiling lights are usually the main source of light that we will have in every room in our home. It’s obvious therefore that we need to think carefully before installing a ceiling light in each room we are focusing on. Not only will everyone who enters the room see the light, they will also be relying on it to show them what the room itself is like.

If you thought that having a ceiling light is simply a way of making sure you don’t trip over in the dark, think again! They can provide a finishing touch that will put the full stop on the decorating we’ve been doing; they can bring light to a previously dark and dingy space; and they can also provide a sense of occasion, or set the mood we want to create in that room.

In short, ceiling lights can achieve many different things at the same time – and that’s why you need to think carefully before buying anything new.

How many types are there to choose from?

There are plenty of different options available to you if you want to buy new ceiling lights. And regardless of whether you have a tiny budget or enough in the kitty to buy an extravagant chandelier, you will certainly be able to find just what you want if you know where to look.

Here are just a few of the options you have available to you:

  • Suspended lights – these are available in many different styles. They might be made from dangling crystals that shimmer in the light, or they could be fixed in place to provide light from more than one bulb.
  • Track lighting – this is ideal in areas where a single light fitting wouldn’t provide the degree of light that you need. This type of fitting can use traction wires to provide a modern feel and effect, or it may use bars which are fixed to the ceiling. These bars then have individual lights (such as spotlights) attached to them at various points.
  • Single shades – perhaps the simplest ceiling light of all. If you have a ceiling flex and bulb in place already, you can fit a single shade to it in no more than a couple of minutes.
  • Flush fittings – if you don’t fancy the idea of a dangling light fitting, you can have a flush fitting that stays close to the ceiling instead.
  • Pendants – as the name suggests, these hang from a single flex. You can also get adjustable ones that you can pull down and up as and when needed.
  • Recessed lighting – for those of you with false ceilings (or those who are thinking of installing them) think about putting some recessed lighting in for the ultimate in low key design but brilliant lighting, just where you need it most.

What kind of effect do you want to create in each room?

This is the question you need to ask yourself before you do anything else. If you want to create a soft, moody glow, then installing a crystal chandelier could well ruin the mood! Conversely, if it’s a well lit kitchen you are after, a single shade light fitting isn’t going to provide you with the light you need.

Not only should you think about what you are going to use the room for, you should also think about the different areas within that room that might need light.

For example, a kitchen may require focused light in several different areas. Spotlights or track lighting can work well in this situation, as well as the addition of higher wattage light bulbs.

What bulbs are there to choose from?

When you choose a brand new light fitting, you should look to see what bulb(s) it requires. A bayonet cap requires a simple turn to install and remove it, while screw caps screw directly into the light itself. Many light fittings will also stipulate a maximum wattage for the item, and you must make sure you adhere to this. If you don’t, there could be a risk of scorching or burning the shade or fitting.

You can also buy opal or clear bulbs, and the type you choose will depend on whether you want direct light or something that is more diffuse. Clear bulbs will give you the direct light, whereas the opal bulbs are better for creating more of a mood, as well as enjoying the extra light.

You can also get coloured bulbs in a range of sizes and types. These are perfect for creating mood lighting and changing the whole appearance of a room. You’d be surprised by how different the room can look with a peach coloured bulb instead of a clear one!

And finally of course, be sure you buy the right size light bulb. From candle to globe, there are plenty to choose from and if you buy the wrong one it won’t fit that brand new ceiling light you’ve bought.

Go for energy saving bulbs – save money and electricity and still get that great look you want!

Energy saving bulbs are steadily becoming more popular as the prices come down. You’ll find that they are sold in much lower wattages than standard light bulbs, but they usually have the equivalent wattage stated on the box.

You can save a lot of money by buying these to replace your existing bulbs. Not only do they use less energy to run (around a fifth of the old style bulbs), but their lifespan is ten times as long as that of a standard bulb.

As you can see, there are plenty of reasons to be looking for some great new ceiling lights and fitting them with energy saving bulbs too. There’s never been a better time to explore the market than now!
